该片通过一个说书人因聚众滋事被带到警局问话的情节，借由这位说书人之口，讲述了粤剧金牌编剧南海十三郎在艺术生涯中的起伏和沉浮。。开开被迫随进城务工的父亲（原明轩 饰）离开乡村，将相依为命的流浪狗小胆儿托付给留守玩伴小燕子（时静怡 饰）。他每日省下早餐费和公交车钱，用电话亭磁卡与小胆儿通话，甚至将课文念给电话另一端的小狗听。寒假返乡时，小胆儿因绝食奄奄一息，开开用棉袄裹着它登上返城火车，却在检票口被父亲强行扯开狗绳，小胆儿追着列车狂奔。进城后的小胆儿展现出惊人灵性，学会用牙齿叼废品换取食物，并与开开的新同桌朱靓（孙艺铭 饰）建立友谊。朱靓提议训练小胆儿表演赚钱，却在筹备期间发生意外：小胆儿为追捕被风吹跑的易拉罐冲上马路，遭轿车撞击重伤。两个孩子在宠物医院彻夜守护，开开含泪为垂死的小胆儿诵读《小王子》，用书本抚平生命的痛楚。。Beto is a lonely man who works as Ranger of the isolated Peninsula Valdes' National Park (Chubut, Argentina).
