But the story is much less important than the scenery : this movie intended to be a manifesto of the modern decorative arts.。1944年，第二次世界大战接近尾声，面临东西夹击的德国已走到了失败的边缘，然而他们仍不死心，为了挽救危局，德军计划从希腊经南斯拉夫撤退回本国，为了能够顺利地撤退，他们要竭力保住一座撤退途中必经的桥梁。与此同时，一小队南斯拉夫游击队员奉命前去炸毁这座桥梁，桥又高又险，任务极其艰巨。如果能炸掉这座大桥，将阻断德军的退路，德军当然也明白这座具有战略意义的大桥的重要性，他们布署了一个团的军力守卫，还安排了对付游击队的专家党卫军上校霍夫曼坐镇在军营中，大桥四周可谓戒备...。
